Anthropic Locks $11.6 Billion Akamai Cloud Deal as AI Infrastructure Credit Faces Rising Yields

Anthropic commits about $11.6 billion over seven years to Akamai Cloud — with a warrant path to roughly 5% of Akamai and commercial upside toward $20 billion — as Treasury yields near multi-year highs raise the cost of the debt-heavy AI factory buildout, Europe publishes a Union data-centre sustainability label, and off-grid solar compute startups raise fresh equity to skip interconnection queues.

Today’s Signals

  • Anthropic-Akamai $11.6B – Seven-year cloud commitment (CPU-capacity framing); ~$5.5B related Akamai capex; warrant path to ~5% of AKAM; commercial upside toward ~$20B; delivery/SLA conditions apply.
  • AI credit / yields – CNBC: 10-year Treasury near 5.17%; JPMorgan June estimate $4.1T AI-related debt through 2030; neocloud lender selectivity rising.
  • EU DC sustainability labels – Commission published Sep 21 Delegated Regulation for common Union PUE/WUE electronic rating scheme; first labels eyed Aug 15, 2027 (>=500 kW).
  • Verda $189M Series B – Emergence-led European neocloud; >$450M total; company unicorn framing; $165M ARR (July).
  • Rune $40M Series A – Spark-led modular AI micro-DCs inside operating solar farms; total $53.5M; active 200 MW Texas solar host (company).

The Big Story

Frontier-model offtake is still clearing multi-billion cloud books — including CPU-heavy capacity — while the debt that funds the factory underneath gets more expensive. On September 24, Akamai disclosed Project Plans under its Anthropic master services agreement: Anthropic committed about $11.6 billion over initial seven-year terms for dedicated Akamai Cloud capacity, framed around growing CPU workloads, subject to delivery and service-availability requirements and ordinary termination rights. Akamai estimates roughly $5.5 billion of related capital expenditure and about $1.7 billion of extra 2026 capex to pre-buy supply-chain components. The equity kicker flips the usual circular AI pattern: Akamai issued Anthropic a warrant covering up to about 5% of Akamai common on an as-converted basis at $111.33 a share, with roughly 2% expected to vest on the announced commitment and further vesting tied to each additional $3 billion of contractual value — a path that could expand the relationship toward about $20 billion total. TechCrunch investor-call color puts 2027 revenue at $150 million to $300 million, with an annualized pace near $1.7 billion by end-2028. This is committed offtake with conditions, not cash in the door. SoftBank’s high-yield print, Nscale’s convertibles, and CleanSpark’s notes close stay on Watching. The new fact is Anthropic buying cloud at Akamai scale while AI credit digests higher yields.

AI

Anthropic’s Akamai book is an LLM-and-cloud story before it is a campus story: seven-year dedicated capacity, CPU-workload framing, and a customer warrant rather than another supplier check into the model lab. Separately, Helsinki-based Verda closed a $189 million Series B led by Emergence Capital — with MUFG Innovation Partners, Supermicro, Varma, Finnish Tesi, and others — taking total funding above $450 million and, on company framing, a valuation above $1 billion. Verda cites a $165 million annualised revenue run-rate in July and plans more than 250 megawatts in 2027, with early Nvidia VR200 NVL72 deployments eyed as it expands beyond Finland. Demand still shows up as multi-year offtake and neocloud equity; the constraint remains who can clear compute, power, and bankable documents on the same calendar.

Money

The rate tape is the new tax on AI leverage. CNBC’s September 27 frame puts the 10-year Treasury near 5.17% — about a percentage point higher year-to-date and, on that reporting, the highest since 2007 — against a JPMorgan June estimate of $4.1 trillion in AI-related debt through 2030. SoftBank’s $11.1 billion high-yield sale earlier this week, with dollar coupons up to 9.75%, is the price-insensitive end of the same market. A Mitsubishi HC Capital credit officer told CNBC lenders are getting pickier — interested in maybe twenty of fifty neocloud names. CoreWeave’s filings warn that each 100-basis-point rise could add about $30 million of interest expense on floating debt as of June. Solaris’s $1.25 billion of 7.000% notes (close eyed October 1) stay on Watching. Equity and convertibles still clear. Floating-rate GPU SPVs feel every basis point.

Energy & Power

Power innovators are selling speed around the interconnection queue. San Francisco’s Rune closed a $40 million Series A led by Spark Capital — total funding $53.5 million — for modular RELIC micro data centers that sit behind the meter inside operating solar farms, tapping clipped and curtailed DC power. Company framing: sixty-minute physical deploy, GPU clusters online in as little as six weeks, and an active install inside a 200 megawatt Texas solar plant. Austin’s TAR, which raised $120 million at a $1 billion post-money valuation earlier this month (also Spark-led), is building islanded solar-and-battery plants in West Texas with gas as emergency backup for an unnamed large cloud customer. Neither print is a verified COD; both are equity bets that stranded midday electrons beat multi-year queue studies. Continuity: Georgia Power’s Google NU-1 nuclear-uprate tariff remains PSC-pending.

Government Power

Disclosure and “pay your own way” remain the legislative language. The European Commission’s DG Energy published on September 21 a Delegated Regulation establishing a common Union sustainability rating scheme for data centres — electronic labels graded A to G on Power Usage Effectiveness and Water Usage Effectiveness for operators with at least 500 kilowatts of IT demand, with first labels eyed for August 15, 2027. Labels are disclosure, not a hard performance ban, but they are built to feed green finance, procurement, and Cloud and AI Development Act assessments. Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s September 21 TCEQ permit pause joins California’s SB 886 tariff path and Oregon’s pending Pacific Power settlement as peer user-pays signals — not a Texas-local lead. Continuity: NERC computational-load drafts still target a December 31 FERC filing; PJM Large Load ride-through still eyes November.

Startup and Small Business Signal

Behind-the-meter AI compute just cleared growth equity while neoclouds raise nine figures. Rune’s $40 million Series A — Spark Capital leading, with Union Square Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, and Activate among participants — funds modular enclosures that turn operating solar arrays into on-site GPU hosts without waiting for substation upgrades. Company claims: non-compute capital cost down about 85% versus traditional off-site builds, zero water cooling, and an active Texas solar host already running. That is a small-team product bet on interconnection scarcity, not a hyperscale campus SPV.

AMP Bottom Line

Anthropic can still clear an $11.6 billion seven-year cloud book with Akamai — and take a warrant path toward 5% of the supplier — while Verda raises $189 million of European neocloud equity. What is getting harder is pretending the cost of capital and the power queue are someone else’s problem: Treasury yields near multi-year highs raise every floating coupon, the EU is about to paste PUE and WUE grades on large Union data centres, and startups like Rune and TAR are raising to skip the interconnection line entirely. The AI factory is being priced on who can fund offtake at the model layer and who can deliver — and pay for — the megawatts and the labels underneath it.
